Dear Members of the Hamilton Campus Community,
I write to let you know that I will be taking sabbatical leave in spring semester 2009. This will allow me to turn my attention to the research project on Enlightenment France that I put on hold when I became President of Hamilton five years ago. I love Hamilton and find great satisfaction in my presidential responsibilities, but these duties do not allow substantial periods of time for study and writing which, as my faculty colleagues well know, are indispensable for a major scholarly project. I am grateful to the trustees for their support and to Joe Urgo for agreeing to serve as acting president during my absence. We will be discussing how best to arrange for coverage of Joe’s decanal duties during spring semester, and any other adjustments that may be required for the smooth continuation of all College functions. I will remain in touch with the College during the sabbatical and will look forward to returning to the presidency by the start of the 2009-10 academic year.
Sincerely yours,
Joan Hinde Stewart

President Stewart's claim about a pressing book project seems rather lame to me. Doesn't one give up such things when you become a president?
What's the story on Urgo? Is he up for the job?
Urgo is smart and savvy.
Excelsior beat its goal, despite the brouhaha.
Would you like to take a vote of the faculty to see if they agree with your assessment of Urgo?
As for Excelsior, thank the deep pockets for another bailout.
