you can't make him drink...

Rumor holds that Dartmouth is on the way to establishing a Daniel Webster Center.  We keep stacking up the opportunity cost, the lost scholarship of the Alexander Hamilton Center and leadership in governance.  All alumni can do is provide some options. An acquaintance from Dartmouth suggested to me that they actually are smarter.

We’ll see … you can lead a horse to water, but you can’t make him drink.

We wish Big Green success.

Alexander Hamilton, on deals made and reneged on: "One great error is that we suppose mankind more honest than they are"

Makes one wonder how Daniel Webster College in Nashua, NH will react to this. First come, first served?

If they were smart, they'd join in.

One wonders if having too much money might be Hamilton's problem. The campus sprouts wondrous buildings but it has, it seems, no room for a center that in its mission spoke to an old alumnus like me and to others like me, I suspect. Dartmouth now picks up from where Hamilton collapsed. Could it be that Professor Paquette is moving to Dartmouth?

I have insufficient information to indict Hamilton's leadership, but I must confess that when solicitors for Hamilton's Excelsior campaign explain the demise of the AHC as "just a matter of governance structures" it makes you wonder if this administration thinks its alumni have actually earned their degrees.

Beautifully said Class of 1957. Bravo!

This has been a classic schoolyard tease since the first posting on this mysterious subject back on June 28.

And wow, 2007, for all of your wildly swinging commentary, I'm surprised you joined the teasing bandwagon.

The intent of this board is to provide a forum for independent & substantive discussion. I've deleted a bunch of comments here to prevent the board from devolving into petty banter.

Thanks for that important link. In many ways the process parallels the redraft of Hamilton's bylaws and governance structure that was presented to and approved by the Alumni Council in Spring of 2007. It's like a shelf registration, hanging out and ready to go.

What's the story HCAGR? Something happened on June 26? It's a month later and you haven't even fired a popgun.

An important announcement will be forthcoming at a time that serves the interests, convenience, and operational requirements of the involved parties.

Have a good summer. We will.

Perhaps HB shouldn't have tantalized, but his advice is well taken. Let's wait for public announcement and trust that outcome will be in the best interests of AHC, its founders, and Hamilton College.

Does Eleazar think that the factotums who run Hamilton College know what is good for the college? They follow the money, and--pace the collapse of the AHC-- deep pockets do not positively correlate to deep thinking.

I agree with Alexander Hamilton, Federalist 76:"The supposition of universal venality in human nature is little less an error in political reasoning than the supposition of universal rectitude. The institution of delegated power implies that there is a portion of virtue and honor among mankind, which may be a reasonable foundation of confidence." I also agree with the founders of AHC that "it is time to move on."

July 22, 2007 at 12:12PM | Unregistered CommenterEleazar

Yes, indeed. Let's see where the founders of the AHC have moved. Has a new agreement been reached with the college? If so, then let us thank that portion of virtue and honor, which some of us have not seen at Hamilton College since the ascendancy of Stuart Scott and Joan Stewart. Or will the answer be that the AHC has moved to a more welcoming location, one where the left-liberals on the board of trustees and the faculty rule less imperiously and have greater respect for academic freedom.

Time will tell. I agree with Winston Churchill: “A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

If I'm not mistaken, Susan Rosenberg, the convicted felon who was hired to teach writing at Hamilton College, received a master's degree by mail order from Antioch. Here is a must read on Antioch and perhaps the future of Hamilton College. One wonders what life for conservative students at Hamilton College is like.

Don't despair Vox. From what I hear, Hamilton has a more politically diverse student body than many, perhaps most, elite liberal arts colleges.
